The Red crowned Parakeet is endemic to New Zealand, with closely related taxa found on Norfolk Island and New Caladonia.. Natural populations may have become extinct on the main islands, except in locations where introduced predators are excluded. its stronghold now are offshore islands that are free of mammalian predators. Filmed at Tiritiri Martangi Island Reserve near Auckland. Its more arboreal relative the Yellow-crowned Parakeet can still be found naturally in a few mainland areas, see: vimeo.com/113077224
