Kaka (Nestor meridionalis, Strigopoidea: New Zealand Parrots) Hawke's Bay, New Zealand- close up view
The Kaka is a uncommon and under threat forest parrot endemic to New Zealand. These days, it does best on off shore islands as on the main islands it is badly affected by predation from introduced possums, rats and stoats. Introduced wasps also compete for sugar rich food. Birds filmed here were at a 'Mainland Island' reserve run by NZ DOC. These birds were hanging about a feeding station having been re-located to the reserve some time ago. I have also filmed fully wild birds in tall forest in the central North Island at vimeo.com/148189863 - a more typical view!
