Maui's Copper (Lycaena edna, Lycaenidae: Blues etc.) central North Island, New Zealand

New Zealand has many species of endemic Copper butterflies of the genus Lycaena, however many have not yet been formally described. I believe these ones are Maui's Copper, filmed near Rotorua in the centre of the North Island. I have used the classification proposed by 'Robertson and Robertson (2012) Butterflies of the South Pacific', Otago Uni Press, NZ.

Lycaena coppers are well known in the temperate northern hemisphere, however they are absent from Australia. However, relatives of these butterflies have been found in alpine New Guinea.

Another NZ endemic butterfly - the New Zealand Red Admiral can be seen at : vimeo.com/116627971
