Wrybill (Anarhynchus frontalis, Charadriidae: Plovers, Dotterels etc.) Auckland region, New Zealand
The Wrybill is a unique little wader (20cm long) and the only bird in the world with its bill bent sideways- to the right!, which it uses to pry insects and the like from under pebbles. Endemic to New Zealand it breeds on single beds of rivers that flow eastwards out of the Southern Alps of the South Island. They mostly overwinter in coastal locations in the North Island, some non-breeders stay for summer; like this bird, filmed through heat-haze at the Miranda Shorebird Centre SE of Auckland. also see vimeo.com/82861648
