Stitchbird / HiHi (male) (Notiomystis cincta, Notiomystidae: Stitchbirds) Tiritiri Matangi Island, New Zealand

Unique to the the North Island of New Zealand the HiHi or Stitchbird disappeared from mainland in the late 19th cent. It survived on one island, Little Barrier Island where the only fully wild population can still be found. Managed populations are now maintained on two other islands - Kapiti and Tiri Tiri Martangi - birds here were filmed on the later. More recently birds have been moved into mainland predator free sanctuaries. It is the sole representative of the family Notiomystidae.
