Kaka (Nestor meridionalis) (Nestoridae: New Zealand Parrots)
The Kaka is a uncommon and under threat forest parrot endemic to New Zealand. These days, it does best on off shore islands as on the main islands it badly affected by predation from introduced possums, rats and stoats. Introduced wasps also compete for sugar rich food. Birds here were wild birds filmed in a forest in central North Island. The call of this bird carries far through the stately trees among which it lives. This film includes a mating scene - a special sight for an uncommon bird that is not easy to see in the wild on the mainland. Also see vimeo.com/113135630 for a closer view.
