New Zealand Dotterel / Tuturiwhatu (Charadrius obscurus aquilonius, Charadriidae: Plovers, Dotterels and Lapwings)

The New Zealand Dotterel is a wader endemic to New Zealand. Found around the shores of the northern North Island with a separate subspecies found on Steward Island down south. It is not common and faces threats from disturbance and introduced predators. Here filmed on the 600 year old or so volcano that is Rangitoto Island in Auckland Harbour. Also in the film is a Variable Osytercatcher, another NZ endemic.
